Imagine a point of light dancing in the dark, probably the illuminated tip of a tuning fork, or an LED light attached to a pendulum.

Now envisage the pendulum oscillating in two dimensions, like Foucault’s Pendulum or a harmonograph.

In the dark, the tip of pendulum traces out a squiggly path. The natural oscillation is bound to decay, so the ‘radius’ becomes smaller and smaller over time.

Now, move to the third dimension! Think of an illuminated little ball attached to pairs of springs, the pairs stretched along the three dimensions of space. Build a 3D harmonograph.

Imagine taking a long-exposure photo. It might look like this!
